Abstract: Konkani journalism traces its beginnings to 1889 with the publication of Udentichem Sallok (Lotus of the East), a monthly newspaper started in Maharashtra. Over subsequent decades, Konkani journalism expanded geographically and culturally across Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala, manifesting through newspapers and magazines that varied in orientation, longevity, and readership. While a few publications flourished and sustained themselves within changing socio-cultural landscapes, many of them succumbed to emergent market forces and shifting tides of times. Drawing on archival research, field visits, and interviews, this first part of the study documents the historical evolution, trajectories, and institutional contexts of Konkani journalism from its inception through the late twentieth century. The article maps the formative phase of Konkani journalism and situates it within the broader history of print culture in the region.
