On January 4, 1992, St Aloysius College began the first-ever Konkani course in Karnataka by establishing the Institute of Konkani. It was a milestone in the history of Konkani language. This Konkani course was held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the college. The subjects included Konkani history, grammar, folklore, poetry, literature, journalism, among others. From March 7, 1997, the course became a Master’s diploma which was conducted both in Kannada and Devanagari scripts. Beginning with 143 students in its first year, this diploma has been completed by over 800 students from India and abroad. Most of these students have researched various topics and written high-quality research papers, some of which have been published in the research journal Amar Konkani.
