On January 4, 1992, St Aloysius College launched Karnataka’s first-ever Konkani course by establishing the Institute of Konkani—a landmark moment in the history of the Konkani language. The classes were held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the college and covered a wide range of subjects including Konkani history, grammar, folklore, poetry, literature, and journalism.
On March 7, 1997, the course was upgraded to a Master’s Diploma and began to be offered in both Kannada and Devanagari scripts. Starting with 143 students in its inaugural year, the diploma has since been completed by over 800 students from across India and abroad. Many of them have undertaken research on various topics, producing high-quality papers, some of which have been published in the research journal Amar Konkani.
In today’s rapidly evolving technological world, adapting to new tools is not just an option—it is essential. In response, we have updated the syllabus to include contemporary subjects such as Natural Language Processing, which forms the foundation of artificial intelligence.
- Diploma Duration: 2 years
- First-Year Subjects: 5 papers (100 marks each)
- Second-Year Subjects: 3 papers (100 marks each)
- Dissertation Option: One dissertation (200 marks) or two additional papers (100 marks each)
