A linguistic analysis of Maffei’s dictionary: (ಮಾಫೇಯಿಚೊ ಶಬ್ದ್ ಕೋಶ್: ಏಕ್ ಭಾಶಾ ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ್ ವಿಶ್ಲೇಷಣ್)

Abstract:

Fr Angelo Maffei who wrote Konkani grammar and two Konkani dictionaries was indeed a self-made lexicographer. These classics are the fruit of his extensive field work in the coastal regions of Mangalore. Even after 150 years of its origin, his dictionary seems quite an important work of reference for the scientific and systematic method that he followed. This article makes a critical appraisal of Maffei’s dictionaries, pointing out both its strengths and limitations, even as the article does not refrain from pointing out in its central argument that Maffei’s work was a landmark contribution to Konkani and needs attention.
